The Remnant

The Remnant is the name of the world our story takes place on, and it is an ancient and terrifying world to live on. Thousands of years ago, before it was called Remnant (known as The Living World back then), the planet was attacked by an unknowable ancient creature known as The Devourer. Astronomers had been watching it devour every other planet in the system over decades, leaving the Living World for last. The people of the world believed nothing could be done to save them. They would have been right, had it not been for Gaxul, The Savior.

It is said that Gaxul (more on it soon) appeared from a falling star that landed in the center of a council held by the leaders of the Living World. It made a bargain with the many peoples of the Living World, promising safety and the death of their assailant in exchange for its permanent habitation on the planet. Gaxul seemed a friendly enough entity, if terrifying in visage, but it was certainly better than the alternative.

The people of the Living World agreed, and Gaxul took control of the world. It is with its guidance that the people poisoned the world, with its revelations that new magics were discovered, and with its orders that the war on The Devourer was launched.

Eventually, The Devourer died (though some say it merely sleeps), but only after enveloping around 60% of the world. It is then that The Remnant came to be, the remains of an old world and an ancient being beyond mortal comprehension. The soil was poisoned, the water bloody, and the lands teeming with monsters and corruption, but at least the people would live. Though how they live is a tale for another time.

Most of history before The Last War is lost to time, with few relics surviving the years since.
